Apartment-block areas in Jelgava mostly get district heating from a biomass cogeneration plant. Cleaning costs from €100 per flue, and the cleaning certificate and the call-out are included.
The Jelgava heating network and houses with their own heating
District heating in Jelgava is supplied by SIA “Gren Jelgava” (formerly “Fortum Jelgava”). The biomass cogeneration plant on Rūpniecības iela produces 95–97% of the heat in the town network and serves about 16,000 households, or 420 residential buildings, about 200 business customers and also some individual houses (jelgava.lv, 22.07.2024).
The town development programme 2014–2020 (prepared in 2013) states that heat is provided by the central system and autonomous heat sources: two networks on either side of the Lielupe and four small local systems, to which most multi-storey buildings are connected. In the detached-house areas heating is up to the owners, and that is where a chimney sweep is needed: boiler flues, masonry stoves, cookers and fireplaces.

Gas heating in the detached-house areas of Jelgava
The 2013 programme names the Viskaļi, Aveņu ciems and Ģintermuiža districts, the centre, Satiksmes iela, Meiju ceļš, 4. līnija, Langervalde, Pārlielupe, RAF and the Valdeka area as supplied with natural gas. We did not find a current Gaso network map, but in Gaso's annual report for 2024 Jelgava is among the towns where it provides distribution.
A gas boiler needs annual servicing and a check. If the flue is brick, it is checked every year, while a lined or metal flue is checked once every two years. If a gas boiler in an older detached house is connected to the masonry channel of a former stove, the flue gases cool in it, condensation forms and the masonry gets damp from the inside. Then you need a liner matching the diameter of the boiler flue. Gaso's simplified procedure for replacing gas appliances requires a certificate on the condition of the flue channel and the ventilation ducts.
More: chimney check for a gas boiler, liner for a gas boiler and gas boiler flue.

Frost and overfired stoves
The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) appeal for frosty weather, published on the Jelgava municipality website on 30.01.2026, says that stoves must not be overfired and combustible materials must be kept away from them. Special attention must be paid to cleaning flues, because burning soot can damage the flue and set the whole building on fire. The appeal also recommends smoke detectors.
Boilers, metal stoves and sauna stoves need cleaning twice: by 1 November and once more between 1 November and 1 March. If soot is burning in the chimney, first call 112. How the second cleaning works in the middle of the heating season: chimney cleaning in winter; after a fire: check after a soot fire.

Businesses, institutions and building managers
Jelgava has production and warehouse sites, a university and institutions that may have their own boiler house or individual heating. A business needs a certificate after every cleaning, and once every five years solid and liquid fuel appliances also need a technical condition inspection on the official form with photos.
More: chimney sweep for businesses and chimney sweep's condition report.
What must not be burned in Jelgava
The Jelgava waste regulations forbid burning waste in any way, including on bonfires, and garden and park waste is a separate category of biowaste. The public order regulations allow bonfires or grilling in public outdoor space only in places specially set up by the municipality.
At home this means that a stove or boiler is no place for packaging, painted wood or leaves. Such smoke leaves tar that sticks firmly to the flue walls and can no longer be removed with a brush: chimney tar removal.
Jelgava city binding regulations No. 23-22 (21.12.2023) on household waste management (likumi.lv/ta/id/349665) and No. 24-26 (20.06.2024), the public order regulations (likumi.lv/ta/id/353040), checked 04.11.2026.
The Lielupe, the Driksa and the route to your house
The Lielupe and the Driksa divide Jelgava, and traffic concentrates on the bridges; railway crossings and traffic in the centre also affect the route. In the request, say whether the house is in Pārlielupe, in the centre or on the other bank, and whether we can park next to it.
Price in Jelgava

The technical condition report, chimney lining and repairs are priced for your situation: the price depends on the length and diameter of the flue, access to the roof and the materials.
