What soot does to a flue

Every heating season soot settles on the flue walls, and wet wood leaves tar. The layer narrows the flue and can catch fire itself.

Drawing: three flue cross-sections - clean, with a thin soot layer and with thick tar
Clean flue Full draught, smoke goes up. Soot layer Weaker draught, the stove starts to smoke. Thick tar The opening is small, the layer can catch fire.
Drawing: good draught and a blocked chimney with smoke coming into the room
Good draught Smoke goes up, the stove burns evenly. Blocked flue Smoke comes back into the room through the stove door. Carbon monoxide risk.
Drawing: cross-section of a chimney from the stove to the cap with four inspection points

Four places where a chimney most often fails

  1. Firebox and connector. The bend between the stove and the chimney collects the most soot.
  2. Cleaning door. We take soot out and put the camera in through it; it must close tightly.
  3. Flue or liner. Cracks, tar and condensate you cannot see from outside.
  4. Chimney head and cap. Rain, frost and wind damage the masonry above the roof.

From the roof or from the cleaning door

The chimney and the roof decide how we clean. Either way the soot ends up in a bucket, not in the room.

A liner in an old masonry chimney

A steel pipe runs through the old flue from the boiler to the chimney head. Wet flue gases from gas and pellet boilers no longer eat into the masonry.

Frost and rain crumble the mortar between the bricks. Water runs into the masonry and the chimney starts to fall apart from the top.

How it works

  1. Request In the form, give the address, what needs doing and what you know about the heating: a stove, fireplace or boiler, the fuel, how many flues and when the chimney was last cleaned. You can send a request at any time.
  2. We contact you within 5 minutes After you submit the form, we contact you within 5 minutes, clarify the job, name the price or what it will depend on, and agree on a day.
  3. Work on site The chimney sweep looks at the heating appliance, the flue pipe and the cleaning doors. The flue is cleaned with brushes and flexible rods from the top or from the bottom, depending on the chimney and access to the roof. The soot is taken out through the cleaning doors so that it does not spill into the room, and finally the draught is checked.
  4. Certificate After the work you receive a certificate with a description of the flue, the cleaner's name, their qualification document and a statement on the result of the work. If we find damage, we record it in the certificate and offer the repair separately; we do it only if you agree.

How often a chimney must be cleaned

Under Cabinet Regulation No. 238, a solid-fuel flue is cleaned before the heating season, by 1 November. For long-burn appliances that store heat for no longer than three hours (usually heating boilers, metal stoves and sauna stoves), the flue is cleaned once more between 1 November and 1 March. A brick flue for gas and liquid fuel is checked and cleaned once a year, and a lined, ceramic or metal one once every two years. Solid-fuel and liquid-fuel flues need a technical condition inspection with a certificate every 5 years. More: how often to clean a chimney. Regulations checked 04.11.2026; from 2 January 2027 they will be replaced by new fire safety regulations, which we will check as soon as they are adopted.

Qualified chimney sweep and certificate

The work is done by a qualified chimney sweep, and the certificate states their qualification document. The fire safety regulations require this: the cleaning certificate must show the name and number of the cleaner's education, qualification or practice certificate. A technical condition inspection certificate may be drawn up by a qualified chimney sweep or stove and fireplace mason, a construction specialist in the relevant field or a fire safety engineer.

The words “certified chimney sweeps” usually mean craftsmen to whom the Latvian Chamber of Crafts (LAK) has awarded a journeyman's or master's diploma as a chimney sweep and a practice certificate. The LAK register is public, and you can check the validity of any chimney sweep's certificate in it. In their policy terms, the insurers BTA, Balta and ERGO require flues to be cleaned at least once a year, so keep the certificate and the invoice. More: chimney report for insurance.

The owner of a private house may also clean their own solid-fuel chimney themselves, and then no certificate has to be drawn up. A certificate is needed if someone else does the cleaning or if the heating runs on gas or liquid fuel, and in an apartment building it is always needed. More: can you clean your own chimney.

Prices

Chimney or flue cleaning costs from €100, usually €100–130. The price includes one flue, the certificate and call-out in Riga and the Riga region. Cleaning the flue channels of a fireplace, stove or sauna stove costs from €100, and heating boiler flue cleaning also from €100. Prices include VAT.

The other jobs are priced for your situation: condition reports, camera inspection, lining, repair, installation and ventilation ducts. The price depends on the length and diameter of the flue, the height of the chimney and access to the roof, the fuel, the materials and whether several jobs are done on one visit. The specialist names the price after your request, before the work. All prices and examples: prices.

If soot is burning in the chimney

If the chimney roars, sparks fly from its top or the flue wall gets hot, call 112 first and follow the firefighters' instructions. The form is meant for the work afterwards. Burning soot damages the flue and helps micro-cracks form, and using a damaged flue is forbidden, so the flue must be checked before the next fire. Deliberately burning out soot is also forbidden.

In the first nine months of 2025, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) put out burning soot in the flues of Latvian homes 261 times. What to do: chimney soot fire; the check afterwards: chimney check after a soot fire.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly will you contact me after my request?

After you submit the form, we contact you within 5 minutes. In the conversation we clarify what needs doing, name the price or what it depends on, and agree on a day.

Do you also clean and check gas boiler flues?

Yes. A gas appliance is checked once a year, a brick flue also once a year, and a lined, ceramic or metal flue once every two years. If the boiler is replaced, a certificate on whether the new boiler may be connected to the flue is needed before it is used. Price depends on the job. More: chimney check for a gas boiler.

Do you work in apartment buildings?

Yes. In an apartment building a certificate is drawn up after every cleaning, and the owner is responsible for the shared heating and ventilation systems, or the manager if the management contract says so. More: chimney sweep for apartment buildings.

How do I prepare for the chimney sweep's visit?

Do not light the stove, fireplace or boiler before the visit, so that the flue has cooled down; the specialist will tell you for how long when you talk. Clear the space by the firebox and the way to the cleaning doors in the attic or the cellar. In the request, write whether there is a ladder on the roof or a safe way to the chimney.
