The Ogre heating network and what stays outside it

The Ogre town heating network is run by the municipal company SIA “Ogres Namsaimnieks”, which is responsible for more than 20 km of heating mains. Heat is produced in its natural gas boiler houses and is also bought from cogeneration units and a wood chip boiler house. A 2022 letter from the Competition Council mentions that the municipal company SIA “MS siltums” produces heat in Ogre from wood chips and pellets.

In the detached-house areas, in the older housing at the edges of the centre and in houses in the wooded parts of town, owners heat their homes themselves, with stoves, firewood and pellet boilers or gas. Gaso lists Ogre among the towns where it provides gas distribution.

Apartment block areas: ventilation and gas appliances

A flat on the heating network usually has no flue, but it has ventilation ducts in the kitchen and bathrooms. The interval in the regulations is at least once every 10 years; if the room has a gas cooker, boiler or water heater, once every five years. In an apartment building a certificate is needed after every check, and the work is usually organised by the building manager.

If the flat has a gas water heater or boiler, its flue must be checked: brick once a year, lined or metal once every two years. Detached houses in hilly, wooded Ogre

The area around Ogre is hilly and wooded. If a house stands on a sloping plot or among tall trees, this means two things for the chimney. First, trees and the hill can change the wind flow, and the draught becomes uneven in windy weather. Second, needles and twigs fall onto the chimney, and without a cap they end up in the flue.

For a boiler and a sauna stove the regulations require two cleanings: by 1 November and once more between 1 November and 1 March. One cleaning a year is enough for a masonry stove. River banks and boiler rooms in the basement

Ogre lies between the Daugava and the Ogre river, and some areas near the banks tend to flood. If the boiler room is in the basement and there has been water there, check the chimney base, the cleaning door and the flue pipe before you light the boiler again. Damp ash hardens at the base, the door frame rusts and the draught becomes weak.

What must not be burned in Ogre

The Ogre municipality waste regulations forbid burning household waste in any way. Leaves, grass and other biowaste may be burned only if the municipality has announced a burning period. If you live in a dense private-house area, even dry wood may only be burned outdoors briefly.
