The Salaspils heating network: sun, wood chips, gas and a data centre

SIA “Salaspils Siltums” provides district heating in Salaspils and Saulkalne: 22 km of networks and 35.18 MW of installed capacity. Heat is produced by a solar collector field (since 2019), wood chip boilers with flue gas condensers and natural gas boilers; Saulkalne has two gas boilers. In September 2026 construction began on a heat pump system and a heating main to use waste heat from the Tet data centre.

We found no source on whether Acone has a heating network. The detached-house areas of the town, the allotment areas on the outskirts and some commercial sites use individual heating.

Flats disconnected from the heating network

The Salaspils regulations on support for energy efficiency in apartment buildings provide for reduced co-funding if the building has flats with disconnected district heating. So such flats exist. If a flat is heated with its own gas boiler, it has its own flue, usually through the building's shared channel or through the wall.

A gas appliance is serviced and checked once a year. A brick flue is checked once a year, a lined or metal one once every two years, while in a room with a gas boiler the ventilation duct is cleaned and checked once every five years. Private houses and choosing a new boiler

The Salaspils heat supply regulations state that in the district heating zone district heating is the primary option. For a new single-dwelling house the owner first assesses zero-emission technologies, then renewable energy sources and then long-term costs and efficiency. If the choice is a pellet or firewood boiler, the house needs a chimney that matches the boiler flue diameter and the fuel.

Garden houses and saunas on the outskirts

The outskirts of Salaspils have forests and allotment areas. A garden house often has a small metal stove or cooker with a short flue, and a sauna has its own stove. A metal stove is a long-burn appliance: if it is also used in winter, it needs cleaning twice. If you live in the house only in summer, clean the flue before the first fire, because over winter birds may nest in it and debris may fall in.

Leaves and branches: no burning in town

The Salaspils waste regulations forbid burning household waste, including on bonfires. Dry leaves and branches may be burned only outside the town area, observing fire safety and without disturbing others with smoke and smell. So in town leaves and branches must be composted or handed in. Burning them in a stove makes no sense either: they smoulder, and thick soot settles in the flue.

Institutes, warehouses and commercial sites
