A private house often has two to four flues with different fuels and different deadlines, so we start by finding out what is connected to which flue. Cleaning one flue costs from €100, with the certificate and call-out included. Write in the form which appliances you have in your house.
What is different in a private house
In the fire safety regulations a detached house is a single-dwelling property. The same applies to semi-detached and terraced houses where each dwelling has its own roof and its own entrance. The owner of a single-dwelling property may clean a solid-fuel flue themselves, and then no certificate has to be drawn up. If a chimney sweep does the cleaning, or if the house has a gas or liquid-fuel boiler, a certificate is needed.
We do not say that the owner of a private house must call in a chimney sweep. Still, there are three reasons why most people do. Climbing onto the roof without equipment is dangerous, the certificate is proof that the chimney has been cleaned if the insurer asks after a loss, and during cleaning the chimney sweep spots damage the owner does not notice. More: can you clean your own chimney.
Cabinet Regulation No. 238 “Fire Safety Regulations”, sub-point 2.15 (single-dwelling property) and point 72 (the certificate and the exception when the responsible person cleans a solid-fuel flue themselves). Source: likumi.lv, checked 04.11.2026. Regulations checked 04.11.2026; from 2 January 2027 they will be replaced by new fire safety regulations, which we will check as soon as they are adopted.
Which deadlines apply to each flue
| Appliance | How often it is cleaned | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Wood, coal or pellet boiler | by 1 November and again between 1 November and 1 March | long-burn appliance (our reading): does not store heat for longer than 3 hours |
| Metal stove, sauna stove | also twice | also long-burn appliances |
| Masonry stove, tiled stove, wood-burning cooker with masonry | by 1 November | stores heat for longer |
| Fireplace with masonry mass | by 1 November | stove fireplaces with a cast-iron firebox are often long-burn appliances |
| Gas boiler, brick flue | once a year | certificate needed |
| Gas boiler, liner or metal flue | once every two years | certificate needed |
So in one house the boiler flue may need cleaning twice a season and the masonry stove flue once. In autumn all of them must be cleaned, but in winter only the flues of long-burn appliances are cleaned again: the boiler, metal stove and sauna stove, if they are also used in winter. More on boilers: boiler flue cleaning.

How a visit to a private house goes
- List of flues We go round the house from the boiler room to the attic and count the flues. One chimney often has two or three channels, and each has its own door.
- Roof or door If the roof can be reached safely, we clean from the top. If not, we clean from the bottom through the cleaning doors and fireboxes.
- Cleaning one by one We clean each flue with a brush that matches its size, clean the flue pipes and take the soot out of the chimney base.
- Attic and roof We look at the chimney in the attic, traces of water by the roof, the head and the cap. We check that timber structures are not too close to the flue.
- Certificate We draw up a certificate for each flue with an assessment of the result. The certificate is proof that the chimney has been cleaned, so keep it.
What we notice most often in private houses
- An old masonry chimney with a new pellet or gas boiler connected and no liner: the channel is too wide, the smoke cools and condensation forms. The solution is usually chimney lining.
- Two appliances on one flue: this is allowed only if both are in one dwelling and on one storey, but a fireplace needs its own flue.
- In the attic the chimney wall has not been whitewashed, so micro-cracks or traces of soot cannot be seen.
- Firewood, boxes and old furniture next to the chimney in the attic. Combustible structures must be at least 300 mm from the outer surface of the flue.

How much a chimney sweep for a private house costs
Cleaning one flue costs from €100, usually €100–130, with the certificate and call-out in Riga and the Riga region. If the house has several flues, we name the price before the work. The price also depends on the height of the chimney, access to the roof and how long ago the flues were last cleaned. All prices: prices.
We work for private houses in all of Riga's detached-house areas and in the Riga region, for example in Berģi, Katlakalns, Ķekava and Ādaži.
