The Sigulda heating network and houses with their own heating

District heating in Sigulda is provided under a municipal concession by the private company SIA “Adven Sigulda”. In its tariff the fuel is natural gas and wood chips, and a new 6 MW biomass boiler has been installed in the modernised boiler house. The municipality's development programme plans to renew and extend the town heating networks and to restore district heating in Allaži.

In the detached housing of Sigulda and its surroundings people produce their own heat: with firewood and pellet boilers, masonry stoves, fireplaces and, where there is a connection, gas. In apartment buildings on the heating network a chimney sweep's work is the ventilation ducts, which are cleaned and checked once every 10 years, once every five years in rooms with gas appliances.

Houses on slopes: how to reach the chimney head

The terrain of the Gauja valley means that one side of a house is often two storeys higher than the other, and the roof can be reached easily from the upper side but not from below. On a steep roof without a ladder or hatch, and in winter when the roof is icy, it is not safe to climb up to the chimney.

Then we clean the flue from below: with jointed flexible rods and a brush through the cleaning door or the firebox. We then look at the chimney head and the cap from the ground or the attic and, if a closer look is needed, with a camera. Guest houses, hotels and tourist sites

Sigulda has hotels, guest houses and tourist and sports facilities that may have fireplaces and saunas. A business needs a flue cleaning certificate after every cleaning, and solid-fuel appliances need a technical condition inspection once every five years. A sauna stove is a long-burn appliance, so, like a boiler, it is cleaned twice: by 1 November and once more between 1 November and 1 March.

Tall trees and draught

For a house in the valley or by the forest, tall trees and the slope can change the wind flow around the chimney, and the draught becomes uneven in windy weather. Needles and leaves fall onto the chimney, and without a cap they end up in the flue. If the stove starts smoking into the room, we first check that the flue is clean, then whether the chimney is tall enough relative to the roof ridge, and only then suggest a cap or a deflector.

In the town of Sigulda branches are not burned either

The Sigulda municipality waste regulations forbid burning waste in any way. Outside the town of Sigulda, plant parts affected by pests and branches broken or cut in the household may be burned where they arise, if fire safety is observed and no visible smoke disturbs others. In the town itself this exception does not apply.

For a stove in the house this means: the fuel is dry firewood, pellets and briquettes, not branches, leaves or packaging. If thick, dark smoke comes out of the chimney, the firewood is usually damp, and soot and tar build up faster in the flue.
