Heating network and individual heating in Saulkrasti

A 2022 letter from the Competition Council states that the municipal company SIA “Saulkrastu komunālserviss” is the only company providing district heating in Saulkrasti and Zvejniekciems, while other companies offer individual heating services to households. In the utility company's tariff the fuel is wood pellets and wood chips. We did not find official information on the gas network in Saulkrasti.

For the chimney this means: in apartment buildings on the heating network the ventilation ducts matter, while detached houses, summer houses and guest houses have their own fireplaces, stoves, firewood or pellet boilers and saunas.

Summer houses and seasonal homes

If the house is used only in summer, the flue stands unused from autumn to spring. During that time birds build nests in it, needles and leaves fall in, and mortar may crumble from the damp. So in a summer house it is easier to clean in spring, before the first fire: then the annual cleaning is done, and the deadline of 1 November that applies to solid-fuel flues is met.

A metal stove, a stove fireplace and a sauna stove are long-burn appliances: if they are used in winter, they need one more cleaning between 1 November and 1 March. Guest houses and fireplaces

Saulkrasti has guest accommodation with fireplaces and saunas. A business needs a flue cleaning certificate after every cleaning, because the exception applies only to a private-house owner who cleans the chimney themselves. The work is best planned before the season, when the rooms are empty, and the certificates kept together with the insurance documents.

In a fireplace, soot collects in the smoke chamber above the firebox and on the baffle plate. If guests light the fireplace, packaging or damp wood may end up in the firebox, and then tar builds up in the flue. Sea wind, salty air and the chimney head

By the sea a chimney is exposed to strong wind and salty, damp air, and the surroundings are dunes and pine forests. During cleaning we look at the chimney head, the crown slab and the metal cap: whether the joints have crumbled, and whether the cap is firmly fixed and not rusted. If wind from the sea pushes smoke back down, a deflector or a taller cap may help.

Apartment buildings by the sea

In apartment buildings in Saulkrasti the flats usually have no flue of their own, but they have natural ventilation ducts. These are cleaned and checked once every 10 years, once every five years in rooms with gas appliances, and a certificate is needed after each check. The municipality grants €5,000 in support for energy efficiency measures to buildings with at least five flats; if the building is being insulated and the windows replaced, it is worth checking the ventilation before and after the work: ventilation duct cleaning.

Saulkrasti rules: branches from October to April, firewood for no longer than 7 days

The Saulkrasti waste regulations forbid burning household waste. Between 1 October and 30 April private persons may burn broken branches and branches cut during maintenance from trees, shrubs and hedges on their own land, if this does not cause disturbing smells for the neighbours. This permission is for a bonfire, not for a stove: green branches smoulder in the firebox and foul the flue.

The property maintenance regulations forbid keeping fuel (firewood, coal, briquettes) on land adjoining the property for longer than seven days. If firewood is tipped out by the street, it has to be cleared within a week, and that is good for the stove too: firewood dried under a roof gives less soot.

Route and price in Saulkrasti

Saulkrasti stretches along the sea and the A1, so a trip to one end of town can be very different from a trip to the other, and in summer traffic and parking by the sea are more difficult. In the request, give the part of town or Zvejniekciems, the street and whether a car can drive into the yard.
