The Riga air quality action programme names Bieriņi among the residential neighbourhoods where houses have their own heating. So the main work here is boiler, stove and fireplace flues. Cleaning one flue costs from €100, with the certificate and call-out included.
Houses with their own heating and smoke in the neighbourhood
The air quality programme names Bieriņi as one of the neighbourhoods where individual heating increases fine particle PM2.5 pollution. This is not a reproach to any particular house, but a good reason to look after your chimney. A clean flue with good draught lets wood burn more completely, and less smoke comes out of the chimney.
Most soot and tar comes from damp wood, burning with the air supply closed and burning waste. In Riga burning waste is banned in all zones, including in a stove. If shiny, hard tar remains on the flue walls after cleaning, it is removed separately: chimney tar removal.

How many times a season and which flue
| Appliance in a Bieriņi house | Deadline | Certificate |
|---|---|---|
| Wood or pellet boiler, metal stove, sauna stove | by 1 November and again by 1 March | if a chimney sweep cleans it |
| Masonry stove, fireplace with masonry mass, wood-burning cooker | by 1 November | if a chimney sweep cleans it |
| Gas boiler, brick flue | once a year | always |
| Gas boiler, lined or metal flue | once every two years | always |
The owner of a private house may clean a solid fuel flue themselves, and then no certificate has to be drawn up. A gas boiler flue always needs a certificate. On when you can clean it yourself: can you clean your own chimney.

If you are thinking about a new boiler
From 12.09.2026, under a state programme administered by the Environmental Investment Fund, households can also receive support for replacing an old wood or pellet boiler with a new pellet boiler, heat pump or solar collector. The application is submitted after the project is completed. We did not find any Riga municipality support for replacing boilers in private houses.
Riga rules allow an existing boiler to be replaced with a new ecodesign boiler of up to 50 kW using the same fuel. According to the municipal zoning map, Bieriņi is in a strip marked as zone II, where new solid fuel appliances are not allowed when the type of heating changes. This is our reading of the map, so check your address in the GeoRiga layer before you buy. The new boiler must be registered with the Riga Energy Agency.
For a pellet boiler the old brick chimney is often too wide and too cold. Before the new boiler is used, you need a certificate on whether it may be connected to the flue, and often a liner is needed too: pellet boiler flue cleaning and chimney lining.

An older house: technical inspection
Solid fuel boilers, stoves and their flues need a technical condition inspection every five years, with a certificate on the form in Annex 8 of the regulations and photos or video attached. In older Bieriņi houses the chimney may have been rebuilt several times, and then a camera shows more than a mirror at the cleaning door: cracks, joints where the mortar has fallen out or a spot where the channel narrows. More: camera inspection. The inspection is priced for your situation.

Access and price
We reach Bieriņi along Kārļa Ulmaņa gatve and Kantora iela. In the request, write where a car can be parked, whether there is a ladder to the roof and how many flues the house has. Cleaning one flue costs from €100, usually €100–130, with the certificate and call-out. Prices: prices.
