Part of the city is on the heating network, but detached houses, guest houses and summer houses have their own heating. Cleaning one flue costs from €100; the cleaning certificate and the call-out to any part of Jūrmala are included.

Where Jūrmala has a heating network and where homes have their own heating

District heating is supplied by the municipal company SIA “Jūrmalas siltums”, whose main boiler houses are in Dubulti and Kauguri. Wood chip boiler houses have been built at both with EU support, to move from gas to renewable fuel. Heating is switched on for a building at the building manager's request.

We did not find a newer network map. The city's spatial plan, based on 2006–2008 data, says that district heating is found in Kauguri, Dubulti and Jaundubulti and in small boiler house areas in Majori, Bulduri and Ķemeri, while detached houses, businesses and institutions use local heating, mostly natural gas. At that time there was no gas in Priedaine. This information is old, so in the request say exactly what the house has.

Wooden villas: a chimney through wooden structures

In the historic wooden housing of Jūrmala the chimney is usually brick and passes through wooden ceilings, the attic floor and the roof structure. Building code LBN 231-15 “Heating and Ventilation” (point 54) requires combustible materials to be at least 300 mm from the outer surface of the flue. In old houses this distance may not have been kept after alterations, for example if the attic has been converted into living space.

During cleaning the specialist looks at the chimney in the attic: whether there are cracks in the joints, whether there are scorch marks by the beams and whether the cleaning door closes tightly. In masonry stoves and tiled stoves the flue channels are cleaned through the doors: tiled stove cleaning. If the condition of the chimney raises doubts, it can be checked with a camera, with photos for the certificate: camera inspection.

Fireplaces in living rooms and guest houses

A fireplace in a villa or a guest house has its own routine. In a fireplace flue, soot collects in the smoke chamber and on the baffle plate, and if the fireplace is used rarely or only in season, birds tend to build nests in the flue.

A hotel or guest house needs a certificate after every cleaning, and the work is best planned outside the busiest season. More: fireplace cleaning and chimney sweep for businesses.

Gas boilers and seasonal homes

A detached house with a gas boiler needs annual servicing and a check. How often the flue is checked depends on the material: brick once a year, lined or metal once every two years. If the house is used only in summer and the gas appliance has been off for longer than six months, an extraordinary check of the flue gas outlet and the ventilation ducts with a certificate is needed before it is switched on.

In a seasonal home with a stove or fireplace, the first fire after winter is the time to check that there are no nests or fallen mortar in the flue: chimney sweep for a summer house. For a gas boiler: chimney check for a gas boiler.

Sea wind, pines and the chimney head

On the coast the wind is stronger, and pine needles and cones fall onto the roofs. The chimney head and the crown slab there are exposed to moisture and frost, and debris falls into a flue without a cap. During cleaning the specialist looks at the chimney head and can tell whether the joints or the crown slab need renewing: chimney head rebuilding.

Jūrmala rules: no waste in the garden fireplace either

The Jūrmala waste regulations forbid burning waste, including on bonfires and in garden fireplaces, and garden and park waste also includes leaves and branches. For an indoor stove and fireplace the principle is the same: burn dry firewood, not leaves, branches or packaging, because they produce more soot and tar.

Distances and price in Jūrmala

Jūrmala is a long city: Majori, Bulduri, Kauguri and Ķemeri are different destinations, and in summer the traffic and parking by the sea are not the same as in winter. In the request, give the part of the city, the street and whether a car can drive into the yard.

Cleaning a chimney, fireplace or boiler flue costs from €100 per flue, usually €100–130, with the certificate and the call-out to any part of Jūrmala. Camera inspection, the condition report and chimney head repairs are priced for your situation: the price depends on the height of the chimney, access to the roof and the materials. Frequently asked questions

Do you work all over Jūrmala, including Ķemeri and Kaugurciems?

Yes, in the whole city from Priedaine to Ķemeri. The certificate and the call-out are included in the price; in the request, give the part of the city and the street.

The attic of our wooden villa has been converted. Does that affect the chimney?

It can. If the chimney is boxed in or wooden structures touch it, the specialist checks the distance to combustible materials and whether the chimney has a cleaning door. If there is none or the distance is too small, this is recorded in the certificate.

Our guest house is open only in summer. When is it best to clean the fireplaces?

Before the season or right after it, when there are no guests. If the fireplaces are also used in winter, cleaning is needed by 1 November.
