Šķirotava: the railway, warehouses and one residential street

The neighbourhoods portal says that production and industrial areas take up a very large area of Šķirotava, and the neighbourhood is made up of large railway junctions, warehouses, wholesale trade and technical services. The residential buildings are low-rise private houses and apartment buildings, mainly on Krustpils iela, and about 2,000 people live in the neighbourhood.

Production sites and warehouses: what must be cleaned and when

Working on an industrial site

The railway and the freight traffic decide when and how work can be done. An industrial site usually needs a pass, an entry permit and an escort. The boiler is stopped and cooled down before cleaning, because a hot flue cannot be cleaned. Tall metal flues often need a lift or cleaning from below through the cleaning door; write the height and diameter of the flue, if you know them. We remove the layer of tar and soot in a solid-fuel boiler flue mechanically, never by burning it out.

Homes on Krustpils iela

In a low-rise private house on Krustpils iela the work is the usual kind: the stove, cooker or boiler flue by 1 November, and for a boiler once more by 1 March. The owner of a private house may clean a solid-fuel flue themselves without a certificate; if we clean it, we issue a certificate. In houses with two or more flats a certificate is always needed.

On houses close to the railway and streets with heavy traffic we inspect the chimney head more carefully: in old masonry with crumbled joints, vibration and the weather together can speed up damage. If we see loose bricks or cracks, we record it in the certificate, and we assess the repair separately: chimney head rebuilding.

Replacing a boiler or stove: the Riga rules

Riga binding regulations No. RD-24-260-sn also apply to Šķirotava. In all zones it is forbidden to install new appliances burning coal, peat or liquid fuel, diesel included, and from 1 January 2031 new individual appliances burning any fossil fuel. In a private house an existing appliance may be replaced with a new ecodesign appliance of up to 50 kW using the same fuel. Before changing the type of heating you need approval from the municipal Heat Supply Commission, and the appliance must be registered with the Riga Energy Agency.
