How Iļģuciems is heated and what it means for the chimney
The neighbourhoods portal says residential buildings take up 43.4% of Iļģuciems, and most of them are multi-storey apartment buildings. These buildings usually get their heat from the heating network, so the chimney sweep's work there is on the ventilation ducts and gas appliance flues, if there are any. Stoves and boilers are found in the areas of smaller houses and in industrial buildings.

Pre-war houses: a technical condition inspection every five years
The older parts of Iļģuciems have houses with brick chimneys that have served stoves and cookers for many decades. On top of the yearly cleaning, a solid-fuel flue needs a technical condition inspection once every five years. This is not the same as cleaning: it checks the masonry, the cross-section, the cleaning doors, the distances to timber structures and the chimney height.
The result is recorded in a certificate on the form in Annex 8 of the regulations. A diagram showing where each flue is, and photos or video, are attached to the certificate, so a camera is used in a narrow or crooked channel. For each flue, the certificate notes whether it meets the requirements and whether it may be used. Detached houses with a gas boiler
If a gas boiler has been installed in a detached house in place of an old stove, the old brick channel is often not suitable. The flue gases of a modern boiler are cooler, condensation forms in the channel and the masonry starts to get damp. Then a stainless steel liner is fitted in the channel. A brick flue for a gas boiler is checked and cleaned every year, a lined one once every two years. When you replace a boiler under Gaso's simplified procedure for replacing gas appliances, you need a certificate on the technical condition of the flue channel and ventilation ducts; the boiler itself is installed by a gas appliance specialist, not by Gaso and not by us. If the boiler has not been used for more than six months, an extraordinary check must be carried out and a certificate drawn up before it is switched on.

Gas water heater in a flat: replacement with a certificate
Some Soviet-era buildings still have gas water heaters or small gas boilers in the flats. Riga's regulations allow them to be replaced with a new ecodesign appliance of up to 50 kW using the same fuel. The application to the municipal Heat Supply Commission must include an inspection certificate on the technical condition of the existing appliance, the flues and the natural ventilation ducts. In 2024 Gaso warned that appliances replaced without approval are often discovered during the periodic checks, which take place once every five years in apartment buildings.
Before the replacement, the flue and ventilation duct in the kitchen or bathroom are inspected, the draught is checked and a certificate is drawn up. The new appliance is then registered with the Riga Energy Agency.

Industrial and warehouse areas
Iļģuciems has an industrial history, and there are still factories and warehouses near Daugavgrīvas iela and Buļļu iela. A company's boiler or furnace flue always needs a certificate, and a solid-fuel boiler is cleaned twice a season. Large boilers often have a tall, wide flue, so you need to know how to reach the roof or the indoor cleaning door, and the boiler must be stopped and cooled down before cleaning.
