Jaunciems outside the heating network
The Rīgas siltums heat supply map, with data as of 01.01.2019, shows only a small district heating zone in Jaunciems, around the boiler house at Gaileņu iela 14. On the map most of the neighbourhood is outside it, and on the 2025 zoning map Jaunciems is in heat supply zone III. This matches the kind of housing: detached houses along Jaunciema gatve and in the forest streets, each with its own chimney.

Two cleanings a season: who needs them
If the house is heated with a masonry stove that holds heat for a long time, one cleaning by 1 November is enough. For a wood or pellet boiler, a metal stove and a sauna stove, the regulations require one more cleaning in the middle of the heating season, between 1 November and 1 March. These appliances do not store heat for long and burn more often or longer on a low flame, so soot and tar build up in the flue faster.

The BTA, Balta and ERGO terms say flues must be cleaned at least once a year. The ERGO terms state that if this has not been done, the payout may be reduced by up to 50% or refused. The Latvian Insurers Association advises keeping certificates and invoices and reminds you that cleaning and the technical inspection need two separate documents. More: chimney report for insurance.

Lake, forest and damp
Ķīšezers, the forests and the lower-lying spots in Jaunciems mean damper air and many trees around the houses. For a chimney this means two practical things. Leaves and pine needles fall into a chimney without a cap, and a damp channel draws less well in autumn. If the chimney has no crown slab or cap, water runs straight into the channel and the bricks start to crumble.
While cleaning, the specialist also looks at the chimney head; if needed, chimney cap installation is possible. A cap is allowed if it does not interfere with the appliance's operation or with cleaning.

If soot catches fire in the chimney
If the chimney roars, sparks fly out of it or the masonry is hot, first call 112 and close the air supply to the stove or boiler. Do not burn out soot on purpose: it is forbidden, and the chimney may crack. After a chimney (soot) fire, the flue must be checked before the next firing; more: chimney check after a soot fire.

The road along Jaunciema gatve
The main access road to Jaunciems is Jaunciema gatve, and many houses are further into the forest or by the lake along narrow streets. In the request, write the exact address, whether a car can get up to the house and whether there is a safe ladder or hatch to the roof.
