Kleisti: far apart, each with its own heating

The neighbourhoods portal describes Kleisti as a neighbourhood of forests and meadows with detached houses and farm sites. On the 2025 zoning map, Kleisti is in Riga's heat supply zone III. Detached houses and outbuildings usually have their own heating with wood, pellets or gas, and their own chimney.

The distances between properties are large, and there is little public transport. So it helps to list all the flues in the yard in the request straight away: house, sauna, workshop or stable with a stove. There is a certificate for each flue.

Outbuildings: hay, ash and the flue

If an outbuilding has a stove or boiler, fire safety needs more attention than in a house, because hay, straw, wood shavings or firewood are often stored nearby. For agricultural sites the regulations require that, if fodder is stored in the attic, there must be a barrier around the flues at a distance of 1 m. Ash and clinker must be kept in a non-combustible container outside the building.

When cleaning in such a building, we also inspect the flue in the attic and what is stored next to it. If we see a risk, we record it in the certificate and tell you straight away.

Wood boiler and sauna: two cleanings

A wood boiler and a metal sauna stove do not store heat for long, so their flues are cleaned by 1 November and once more between 1 November and 1 March. A masonry stove needs just one cleaning by 1 November. If you burn damp wood from your own forest, tar builds up faster; firewood should dry in a dry, ventilated place before it is burnt.

Damp lowlands and forest

Kleisti has forests and damp lowlands. If a house or sauna stands among trees, leaves and pine needles fall into the chimney, and damp stays in the masonry longer. If the flue draws worse in autumn, the reason is often a damp or partly blocked flue, not the stove. A cap and a crown slab protect the flue from rain and leaves; a cap is allowed if it does not interfere with cleaning.

Changing your heating in Kleisti

In zone III, when you choose a new type of heating, priority goes to zero-emission solutions, then to solid biomass such as wood or pellets, and only then to gas. An old wood boiler may be replaced with a new ecodesign boiler of up to 50 kW without changing the type of heating. The new appliance is registered with the Riga Energy Agency, and before it is connected you need a certificate on whether it may be connected to the flue. Since 12.09.2026, the Environmental Investment Fund's household support programme also accepts applications for replacing an old wood or pellet boiler with a new pellet boiler or a heat pump; the application is submitted after the project is completed.
